Absolutely.
It is the power of your intention that will be the motivating factor. Don’t be discouraged by your dogs age – embrace the learning capabilities of your canine citizen.
Short positive training sessions will see your ageing citizen begin to respond.
Stimulating a dog’s mind with an interesting ‘scenting’ activity may lesson the ageing symptoms.
Start by moving a piece of cheese or sausage across the ground in a straight line, approximately 1 metre in length.
· Leave the ‘treat’ at the end of the line.
· Place the hand that had the treat in it, near your dogs nose and command him to find!
· When he is successful, loads of hands on praise.
· His reward is the ‘treat’ and your praise.
Remember, like us, the body of your ageing canine companion, just doesn’t function the way it used to!
He will tire quickly!
You will need to be positive.
You will need to be confident
You will need patience.
Always finish on a positive, with a game.
You can help your senior dog by maintaining a consistent routine and eliminating as many stress factors in his life as possible.
Make sure he's comfortable at all times by keeping him cool in the summer and warm in winter.
Ensure that he gets enough exercise with a short walk during the day.
Above all, make sure he gets plenty of love and affection.
